Motor Vehicle Collision Involving Two Pedestrians
RCMP File#: 20151601913
Morinville, Alberta - On December 12th, 2015 at approximately 5:18 p.m. Morinville RCMP and emergency services responded to a motor vehicle collision involving two pedestrians and a single motor vehicle on highway 37 near the hamlet of Calahoo.
The passenger car was heading east on highway 37 when it came across two individuals walking in the travel portion of the highway. The driver was unable to avoid the collision. One adult male pedestrian received minor injuries and was transported by ground ambulance to hospital for treatment. The adult female pedestrian received more serious but non-life threatening injuries was also transported by ground ambulance to hospital. The driver was not injured.
Speed of the passenger vehicle was not a factor in the collision. There was no evidence of alcohol consumption or distracted driving on the part of the driver of the passenger vehicle. Road conditions were not a factor at the time of the collision, but lighting conditions were poor at the time.
Factors in the collision were that the pedestrians failed to walk on the left side of the highway facing traffic. Alcohol is also considered a factor with the pedestrians and that they were both dressed in dark non-reflective clothing.
Pedestrians are encouraged to "be seen". Wear brightly coloured or reflective clothing, especially when walking in low light or poor weather conditions. If you are impaired, seek assistance and find alternative transportation. When walking where possible use all available walkways or sidewalks. If walking on the traveled portion of a roadway always walk as close as you can to edge of the road and always walk facing traffic.
No charges have been laid at this time.
