 On February 25^th, 2017, Morinville RCMP received a report of a break and enter into a residence on Township Road 542 just East of Highway 28, in Sturgeon County. The victim returned home to find the the back door of the residence smashed in to gain entry.

Police believe the break in happened between 5:00pm the previous evening and 1:00pm that day.

On February 24th, 2017, Morinville RCMP received a report of a break and enter into a residence on Township Road 582 just West of Highway 2, in Sturgeon County. A neighbour noticed that the residence was broken into via the main door by smashing the window in the door. Police believe the break in happened sometime overnight and are looking for any information about suspicious vehicles or activities noted in the area recently.

The door-to-door sale of energy products and services is against the law in Alberta since the ban on the practice came into effect Jan. 1, 2017.

The ban was introduced in response to more than 1,000 complaints from seniors and families who felt misled into buying furnaces or signing energy contracts. Door-to-door sales of furnaces, water heaters, windows, air conditioners, energy audits, natural gas and electricity energy contracts are included in the ban.

However, over the past month and a half, the government says it has received several reports about salespeople misrepresenting themselves to get invited into a customer’s home, something the province says violates Alberta’s consumer protection laws.
Service Alberta has received 18 complaints about door-to-door energy sales since the ban, and 10 investigations are underway for misleading methods.

“I want to remind Albertans they have protections in place. No one should feel pressured or tricked into making a purchase on the spot,” said Stephanie McLean, Minister of Service Alberta in a release Tuesday. “Our government banned door-to-door energy sales to make life better for Alberta consumers. We are monitoring the situation closely and will take further steps if necessary to protect Albertans from aggressive, misleading sales pitches at their doorsteps.”

Tami Lackey, Owner & CFO, Acclaimed! Heating, Cooling and Furnace Cleaning said she was impressed with how quickly Alberta’s government moved to combat deceitful business practices being used by some companies.

“We get calls from customers embarrassed they were scammed and left with faulty installations,” Lackey said. “We do our best to help and encourage everyone to do their research before signing any contract. ”

The government identifies the following misleading practices:
Companies misrepresenting themselves as an agent of a local utility or local municipality.
Using sale of light bulbs or furnace filters to get into a home to sell a banned item.
Telling customers they are conducting a survey or inspection to qualify for a non-existent rebate.

Penalties for companies that do not comply include a fine of up to $300,000 or up to two years’ imprisonment under the Fair Trading Act (FTA). Other sanctions include administrative penalties of up to $100,000, director’s orders and licensing actions.

Alberta Wildfire Season Begins March 1

Though snow and ice are still on the ground, Alberta wildland firefighters are gearing up to defend the province and its communities from forest fires.
Human activity caused more than 60 per cent of last year’s wildfires. Last year, 1,338 wildfires burned more than 611,000 hectares, including the Horse River wildfire that spread into Fort McMurray.

By starting Wildfire Season a month early once again, the province is hoping to remind Albertans to help prevent wildfires in forested areas by being extra careful.

“Protecting Albertans from the threat of wildfire is one of our highest priorities,” said Oneil Carlier, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. “That’s why we legislated March 1 as the start of fire season, recognizing that recent trends show wildfires are starting earlier in the spring. The wildfire that burned into Fort McMurray last year serves as a reminder of how important it is for us to be ready to respond to wildfires at a moment’s notice.”

Fire permits will be required for any burning, outside of campfires, in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta. Fire permits are free and can be obtained by contacting your local Alberta Agriculture and Forestry office. Phone toll-free 310-0000 to locate your nearest office.

SRCWA President Feature

Hi Everyone,

The following is an update since our last meeting in January.

My first reminder is that the income tax season has started and I would remind you to pick up your mail on a daily basis.  You have so much pertinent information in the mail that would be of interest to thieves.  Mailboxes continue to be broken into and could possibly increase during this time of year.

We update our memberships on a continual basis – if you know of any members who are not receiving their emails please ask them to contact me at sturgeonrcwa@gmail.com.  They may have changed their email address and we have no way of knowing that unless we are contacted.

You will have noticed that one of our recent fan-outs was courtesy of a member. As you would have seen in the fan-out, the member first reported the incident to the RCMP.   It is so helpful to have our members email me with the information of any incidents or suspicious activity that they see.  Working together and being the eyes and ears of all the communities will make us all safer.  It is our purpose to work with the RCMP and this is a great way of doing it.

 The following are a number of upcoming events;

Tuesday March 14, is our Annual General Meeting being held 7 p.m. at the Provincial Building in Morinville.  Any of our members who are interested are welcome to attend.

Tuesday April 4, is the Poster Contest Awards Night.  It will be held at the Rendezvous in Morinville - the doors open at 6 p.m. and the program will begin at 6:30.

Tuesday April 11, is our regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. at the Provincial Building in Morinville.

Friday April 21 and Saturday April 22 is the Morinville Trade Show.  There will be more information to follow.

Tuesday May 9^th our regular monthly meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Protective Services Building at 54509 RR 252 south of Highway 37. It is home to Enforcement Services, Animal Control and the District of Namao Fire Department.  This is a great opportunity for any County residents to come and tour the facility and see what is provided.  There will be staff available to give tours and answer any questions you might have. 

Thursday June 8 – is the Sturgeon County Open House – our table is booked and the open house is on from 2 – 7 p.m.

Tuesday June 13 is our regular monthly meeting to be held at 7 p.m. at the Provincial Building in Morinville.

We will forward more information regarding these and other events as we receive it.

Robbery from Taxi Cab Driver-Sturgeon County

ROBBERY FROM TAXI CAB DRIVER STURGEON COUNTY

REQUEST PUBLIC’S ASSITANCE FOR INFORMATON REGARDING INCIDENT

On February 17^th, 2017 at approximately 7:00 pm Morinville RCMP responded to an incident involving an assault and theft from a taxi cab driver near the intersection of Highway 642 and Highway 28 (east of Morinville and southwest of Bon Accord).

The suspect involved in the incident is described as:

·         Aboriginal

·         Approximately 35 years of age

·         Wearing dark clothing

The female suspect after assaulting the cab driver was attempting to flag down other motorists to leave the area prior to police attending.  It is believed that the female suspect may have been picked up at the above location and then again at the intersection of highway 28 and Lily Lake road (range road 235) just east of the Town of Bon Accord.

The Morinville RCMP would like to speak to anyone who may have picked this person up or who as any other information related to the incident.

Morinville Macs Robbed / Coin Collection Return / RCMP Target Young Adults

On February 15th, 2017 at approximately 9 p.m. a male and female entered the Macs Convenience store located at 9821-100 street in Morinville, Alberta. The two entered the store and the male demanded money and cigarettes. The male had his face partially covered by a bandana. The male produced a can of bear spray and attempted to

 

spray the clerks. The female took some potato chips and acted as a lookout as the male grabbed cash and packages of cigarettes. The two then fled to an awaiting white car.

The female is described as:
· Dark hair
· Tattoo on the left side of her face
· Wearing all black clothing
· Wearing grey high top runners
· Darker skin complexion
· Approximately 5’8” tall


The male is described as:
· Wearing a dark shirt with a white logo on it
· Wearing a flat brimmed hat
· Wearing lighter pants


The Morinville RCMP is requesting the public’s assistance in identifying and locating the two suspects.

Morinville RCMP seek to return extensive coin collection to its rightful owner

The RCMP are hoping to find the owner of a coin collection, including a Volunteer Service Medal amongst other things. Recognizing both the monetary and the highly sentimental value this collection likely has, the RCMP is putting out this request for help.


Following a stolen property investigation in 2014, a search warrant was executed at a rural residence outside of Morinville and a substantial amount of property was recovered by the RCMP. Ongoing efforts have been made to return all the property to rightful owners.


Police say it has been a lengthy exercise in sorting and cataloguing property for input into the RCMP file system, as well as reviewing files, querying databases and locating owners.
The majority of the property has either been returned or otherwise disposed of.


A coin collection containing a large variety of coins including Olympic coin sets remains unaccounted for.

Government is targeting young adults on responsible drinking

The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) is hoping to spark a conversation with young adults between the ages of 18 and 29 on what it means to drink responsibly. AGLC unveiled its latest ad campaign – What do your empties say about you? – Wednesday.
The new DrinkSense campaign targets young adults in the hopes of raising greater awareness about Canada’s Low-Risk Drinking Guidelines and the importance of drinking in moderation.


“While research is showing that young adults in this age group are aware that binge drinking or heavy drinking is an unhealthy behavior, there is still a low level of awareness of Canada’s Low-Risk Drinking Guidelines,” said AGLC President and CEO Bill Robinson in a release Wednesday. “With last fall’s successful launch of DrinkSense, this next phase of DrinkSense is an exciting opportunity to reach young adults using creative channels and messaging – all while promoting that you can still have a great time by making responsible choices.”


The campaign, which will run for six weeks, features an interactive online quiz encouraging young adults to discover “What do your empties say about you?” It is also an opportunity to learn more about recommended drinking guidelines. 
 
Additionally, A 7-foot Drinko game will be taken to a number of Alberta campuses this spring, providing what the government sees as an interactive experience that educates students abour responsible drinking. Other promotions include a mobile app, launching in the spring, that calculates how much someone is drinking and commercials playing at Cineplex movie theatres.

Suspicious Occurence

Date: Feb. 8th, 2017

Location: Area of range road 235 and Secondary Highway 651

 

At approximately 16:50 hours a complainant reported a newer red Dodge 4 door pick up drove up the driveway and parked. There were two male subjects in the vehicle. Both appeared to be in their late to mid-thirties. The vehicle then turned around and left residence heading west on Hwy 651. No Licence plate was obtained. The complainant was concerned suspects may be casing out residences.

Attempted Break-In, Theft, Phone Scams

Sturgeon County, AB - Monday February 6, 2017 at approximately 14:00 hours, unknown parties attempted to break into a garage located on a residential lot in the area of Range Rd. 262 and Twp. Rd. 554.  Member noted that these brazen individuals attempted a break and enter in broad day light. RCMP request to PLEASE lock your buildings, vehicles etc and call in ANY suspicious activity!

Sturgeon County, AB - Between Dec. 24th and Jan 5th four unknown parties broke into a secure storage lot in the Pro North Ind park and stole two trailers, one enclosed and one snowmobile trailer.

 

Suspect trucks are a 2006-2010 F250 and a 2009-2016 F150

 

RCMP note that in both instances the passenger got out, forced the gate open and entered the property.  RCMP also note that the theft appeared to be targeted.

And you would probably have a tough time fighting it in court.

RCMP warn of Canada Revenue Agency scam - again

The RCMP and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) are warning Canadians about an ongoing CRA phone scam.

The scammers tell taxpayers they either owe money to the CRA or have a tax refund. When told they owe money, taxpayers are threatened with arrest or jail if they do not take immediate action by providing money, personal or financial information.

“The CRA takes these matters very seriously and provides substantial information to Canadians about how to protect themselves from scams undertaken using the CRA’s name,” said the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue in a release Thursday. “Informing yourself is particularly important during the tax filing season when such scams peak.”

Assistant Commissioner Todd Shean, who leads the RCMP’s Federal Policing Special Services, said scammers are always seeking new ways to gain personal information or money,” he said. “The RCMP works every day to track down fraudsters and bring them to justice, but raising awareness about fraud is also important as it is one of the most effective ways of protecting Canadians from scammers. The more you know about a specific fraud, the less likely you’ll be a victim of that fraud.”

RCMP remind people when CRA employees call taxpayers, they follow established procedures to protect personal information. They advise contacting the CRA at 1-800-959-8281 to confirm the call.

Residents are advised to contact the RCMP and their bank if they believe they have been the victim of fraud or given personal or financial information in error.

Theft at Morinville Macs Store

THEFT OF CIGARETTES & MERCHANDISE AT MORINVILLE MACS STORE

On February 4^th, 2017 at approximately 7:50 p.m. two males entered the Macs Convenience store located at 9821-100 street, Morinville, Alberta.  The two males walked about the store and then approached the store clerk requesting two cartons of cigarettes from behind the till.  The two males then acted as if they were going to pay for the merchandise and abruptly grabbed the cigarettes and two beverages and ran out of the store without paying to an awaiting vehicle.

The male that left with the cigarettes is described as:

·         Stocky in build weighing approx. 250 lbs.

·         Dark straight brown hair with a beard and moustache

·         Caucasian

·         Approximately 20 years of age

·         Was wearing a dark winter coat with a fur lined hood

The male that left with the beverages is described as:

·         Slender in build weighing approx. 130 lbs.

·         Possible aboriginal decent

·         Was wearing a blue toque

·         Was approximately 20 years of age

The Morinville RCMP is requesting the public’s assistance in identifying and locating the two suspects.

Attempted Property Theft / Change Machine Theft

Sturgeon County: On Jan 29, 2017, at approximately 9:40am, near RR 250, a grey Dodge diesel truck hauling a 20ft white enclosed trailer pulled up across from a house. The occupant walked up the driveway and to the side of the home. When approached he got into his vehicle and sped away south towards Edmonton on 127 Street. No damage was made to the property.

 

Upon reporting the incident to the RCMP, they advised the truck/trailer had been stolen and the same suspect was seen at multiple locations that day in regards to other property crimes.

 

He is between 25-35 years old, 5’6", 180lbs, and had dark hair. He was wearing a green/black stripe hoodie.

Police looking to catch change machine scanner

Morinville RCMP are investigating a three-month-old crime that occurred at Morinville Community High School.

On October 25th, 2016, money was stolen from a change machine located in the common area of the school.

Police say suspects entered the school in the afternoon and stole the money without being noticed. A male suspect was viewed on surveillance walking back and forth between the change machine, the vending machine, and the adjacent washroom several times before leaving the premises. His female accomplice was seen walking and moving about to distract attention away from the male.

Police say the male used the "stringing” or “fishing" technique to steal the money. Criminals trick the change machine into thinking money is inserted, but the bill is pulled back out with the string, allowing the suspects to walk away with their money as well as the dispensed change.

No surveillance images or footage have been provided with respect to the incident.
